Delonghi Icona Eco 310 and 311 Espresso Coffee Makers Review

Delonghi ECO 311 espresso coffee makers replaced the ECO 310 Icona model that had been produced since 2010. In fact, these two models have almost no differences. All inner parts remained the same. However, this can be said about almost any other espresso coffee maker of this brand.

It is Simply a Matter of Marketing. The Manufacturer has Decided to Update a Product Line Every 5 Years as They do in the Automotive Industry.

So, what exactly has changed in the De’Longhi ECO 311 in comparison to the 310th model? Well, at least two things:

  • Now there is an automatic cutoff function. After 9 minutes of downtime, the machine turns off. This feature has been introduced to meet strict European standards of electrical energy consumption.
  • The ECO 311 is completed with a portafilter of a new design. However, the last produced ECO 310 models already came completed with the new portafilter. Whereas, the first 311-s sometimes included the “old” one. In general, this is exactly why any manual has the following clause: “a manufacturer in its sole discretion and without a notice may change the complete set, appearance, country of production, and technical characteristics of the model”

New Delonghi Portafilter. Picture of the “Old” Filter in a Frame.

Important note. Despite the fact that officially Delonghi 310 is called “15-Bar-Pump Espresso Machine”, you should not be misled by the word “machine” in the title. It is not an automatic coffee machine, it is a coffee maker. That is, the automation here is at a minimum level. You will have to grab ground coffee (or preferably to grind it just before brewing), put it in the portafilter, tamper it, warm up the coffee maker, and manually turn on the water supply; then, dismantle the portafilter and clean coffee residue off it. Just like any barista would do. Cappuccino should also be cooked manually.

What is the “New Delonghi Portafilter” and What Makes it Different From the Old One?

  1. Now, there is a filter fixing spring for a coffee filter inside the portafilter. Now it is firmly fixed in it, making it easy to throw out the coffee grounds. As a result, there is no need for a mechanical filter holder. Therefore, the thrust has been removed from its design.
  2. The coffee-cream filter system has also been changed. Like any modern coffee machines and coffee makers, Delonghi 310/311 is equipped with a special filter. With it, even an amateur would be able to get a nice coffee foam and a rich taste with any grinding and with any grain. A filter in the old portafilter was designed as a plastic flap (a similar solution is still used now in a Saeco Poemia coffee makers), the new portafilter has baskets with a double floor. Its effect is about the same, but there are less plastic elements contacting coffee, which is good news.
  3. The portafilter feels heavier, now it feels more like portafilters used in professional espresso machines. Nevertheless, we should not delude ourselves into thinking that this effect is achieved by the use of other materials. The reality is it’s a metal cylinder-sinker hidden in a handle of the portafilter.

De’Longhi ECO310R as well as Series 310 makes perfect crema on top of espresso

What do Coffee Makers Series 310 and 311 Have in Common?

De’Longhi ECO311, just like ECO310, has a full metal body. The design has not changed, it is made in retro style and feature different colors: red Icona ECO 311.R, white 311.W, black 311.BK, and beige 311.BG:

DeLonghi ECO310 espresso maker comes in three colors: red ECO310R, black EC310BK and white ECO310W. All theree are still available on the market.

However, in North America less color options are available. In the UK and other European countries, you can find models of all colors.

In Europe, there are also modifications in olive and light blue color called “Azur” under the ECOV 311 index (a prefix V means Vintage). They differ only in terms of body colors and in the fact that these models still include old types of portafilters (without fixing spring) made of brown plastic. In addition, Icona Vintage leather logo key ring goes with it as a gift (but do you really need it?):

Big stainless steel boiler for 180ml gurantees that the temperature will be stable during coffee extraction. Boiler power of 1,100 watts and standard Delonghi pump is enough to prepare a 2-2.2 fl oz (60-70ml) of coffee at a required temperature and a pressure of 9 bar. Further, the temperature falls below 365 K (92°C) as the machine informs us about that with the light turning off. This is sufficient for the preparation of espresso and lungo in canonical volumes. However, you can wait 20-30 seconds for the boiler to heat up the water and continue.

This is the parameter that distinguishes Delonghi ECO311 Icona from more expensive coffee makers with thermoblock as a heating element (such as EC 680/685 or EC 820.B). They can maintain the desired temperature and pressure for longer. At the same time, it is not inferior to its direct competitors. Saeco HD 8325 Poemia has even weaker boiler of 950 watts and 110ml.

Delonghi 310 and 311 both have a manual cappuccinator of “pannarello” type

The coffee maker features a function that lets you make any espresso-based milk beverages with a manual cappuccinator-pannarello. Of course, it does not turn 360° as it is the case with expensive portafilter coffee makers, but it deviates from the cup stand to the side at a large enough angle so that you can whisk the milk in a pitcher or a glass. It also makes it possible to turn espresso into Americano (if you simply run a large amount of water through the portafilter, you get lungo).

On top of the coffee maker, there is a chrome platform with a passive cup heater. It copes with its task quite well, if you reheat the coffee maker, let it steam out for 5-10 seconds, and wait about five minutes, or better yet, make 1-2 servings “in idle.” Otherwise, the upper plate doesn’t get warm enough and it takes too long for cups to warm up. However, it is also advisable to do so to warm up a group (portafilter), which has a positive effect on the extraction of coffee.

The water tank (50 fl oz) is in the rear part of the coffee maker and it is made of transparent plastic. This makes it easy to monitor the water level and refill it without removing the tank itself (but if necessary, it is possible to take it out). The plastic tank itself, and all sealing rubber components are made of high-quality materials and do not affect the taste and odor of water, as it is the case with some cheaper competitors, e.g. Mr. Coffee models.

Unfortunately, one problem of the 310th model hasn’t been addressed. Metal cup stand located right under the portafilter is not fixed in place. Therefore, when using light cups, they vibrate and clang when the pump works and the shining stand gets scratched. Buyers complained in their reviews about it. The solution is either you don’t pay attention to the noise, or use heavier cups, or just put a cup on a napkin.

Conclusion of the Review and Similar Models: Scultura and ECP

De’Longhi ECO 310 or 311 Icona are good choices if you care about a design of your future coffee maker and need a simple coffee maker for home use with a pressure of at least 9 bar.

Full Metal Body, “New Portafilter,” and Design Explains Higher Price Tag Compared to Cheaper Delonghi Models.

However, in North America, the 311th model usually costs more than “old” model of the 310 series. As I mentioned above, the differences are purely symbolic, the quality of coffee is not affected. Therefore, it is reasonable to choose the red De’Longhi ECO310R or black DeLonghi ECO310BK in this price range. You will get an excellent coffee maker which will serve you for years making you delicious espresso. However, of course, it requires proper maintenance: make decalcification once or twice a year, including dismantling and cleaning the filter. New ECO 311 series requires decalcification, filter cleaning is not necessary.

In some counties Delonghi also sells ECZ models. It is black ECZ351.BK Scultura, beige ECZ351.BG, white ECZ351.W etc. All espresso machines with 351 index have all the same characteristics as ECO311 models. Except the design, which became more vintage and has less metal in coating (upper colored part on Scultura is made of plastic, it’s not the metal as on ECO311), and the tamper, which is now a separate accessory (on the ECO311 it was built-in). Sizes changed a little due to it, however insignificantly, just ±1cm. All esle buing equal and these changes does not affect the coffee quality.

If the design and appearance are not important to you, it would be wiser to buy Delonghi EC 155 or new Delonghi ECP 31.21, which is cheaper becuase of plastic finishing and different controls. Technically, they are identical. However, EC 145, which is even more cheaper, is not worth your attention, since it has no pressurized crema filter, which, in my opinion, is important for a beginner. Well, if you are not an amateur, but rather a professional, it is unlikely that you consider buying one in this price range.

P. S. Want to know more? Look how I dissambled this model and compared it with other espresso makers.

  • Hi, I'm considering to get either ECO311 or EC685. I'll be mostly trying to make latte for 2. I've also heard lots of durability issues for both too. EC685s' milk steamer should work better for latte I guess. However, there are lot of issues about leaking water about it that I think it might be a result of thermoblock. What would you recommend for my conditions? Thanks for your help

    • Hi, Cagan. EC685's frother indeed will be more faster for 2 lattes made in one time. Mainly because it produces longer steam flow. You might have to make a pause, because the steamer is limited for ~60 seconds maximum (machine stops to prevent overheating). However, this pause will be shorter than in the case of the ECO311, where the capacity of the steam is limited by boiler size. ECO311 will require more pauses between coffee ans steam modes, also. So, yes, if the speed is your top priority - EC685. However, I find the shape of panarello of ECO311 a bit more comfortable to use.

Leaking issues doesn't collerate with heating element. Because boiler/thermoblock doesn't usually leak. The leakage is caused mainly by broken watertube connectors or pump, they are similary made on both machines.

So, overall, yes, generally my advice would be the EC685. However, the EC311 is still good (and probably cheaper?), if you're not in a hurry when making your coffee.

  • hi, thanks for your review.
I have a faulty icona 310 can i use its sump and portafilter (old type) & tray and water tank for micalite ico 311 that is missing these spares especially the sump & portafilter (new type with spring ).

    • Hi, can't say for sure, however, I would give 99% that everything from eco310 will fit into 311. Espescially, if you will use old portafilter with old baskets together. Please let us know about results if you will try! It would useful info for other readers.

  • Hi, i've bought ECO 311 and I am not happy with it. Regarding the crema/foam, my old saeco poemia was better but they say it's not available on the market anymore. What sohould I do to make a good crema esspresso and the ese pads coffee? Thank you very much.
    regards
    draga

    • Hi! Indeed, the Delonghi's filters (especially new ones, as we discussed in comments above) are less efficient in creating crema. Saeco Poemia's is number 1 among home espresso machines in terms of crema. Poemia isn't available, but they relaunched it several months ago under the Gaggia Viva name - it's the same machine, but the different boiler is used.

For better crema on Delonghi try to use fresh ground coffee with robusta. Something like 80% arabica and 20% robusta would be great. Tamping also helps.

  • Hi there, I have spent 6 months looking to buy a bean to coffee machine and I still cannot make the decision! I know I don’t want a pod machine and I love cappuccinos and don’t want to spend over £250. Please put me out of my misery and just tell me which machine to buy!

    • Hi, Dawn. As I can seen based on amazon's prices there is not much choice... It's literally 5 machines, I will comment each:
      1) Delonghi ESAM 4200 by Delonghi. My review here: http://101coffeemachines.info/delonghi/esam/ Thi machine on amazon: https://amzn.to/2BKaYCy It's a bit loudy an outdated model, but still makes good espesso. No specail functions. Not compact. As any Delonghi it makes a bit more bitter coffee and a bit more hot (of compated to Saeco, Jura, Krups etc). Overall it's a good and 'honest' choice.
      2) Delonghi ESAM2800 https://amzn.to/2PWSXGp and ESM2600 Both are the same machine as 4200, just different design.
      3) Delonghi ETAM29.510 https://amzn.to/2BH5N6o It's definetly the best choice for a £250 budget. However, I'm not sure that the current price tag is not a one day discount, usually it costs more. This machine is quiter and is more compact if compared to ESAM series (it's one of the smallest bean to cup machines on the market - takes just 936 cm2 on the table), has a special LONG program for americano. The panarello wand could be more comfortable in my opinion, but nothing critical.
      4) Beko CEG5301X https://amzn.to/2BH5N6o Chinese engineered machine, makes very watery espresso (see photos from my test, Beko is on the left, Melitta is on the right http://101kofemashina.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_20180424_142411.jpg ), limited adjustments and... no panarello for milk frothing, so it doesn't fit you.
      5) Gaggia Unica https://amzn.to/2CyNiTC It's some old Gaggia's model, never tried it, so can't give more details. However, you can give it a try. Gaggia makes good espresso machines and in coffee machines world the older usually means the better ;)

  • Hi. I have an ECZ 351. I would like to create microfoam (or something close to it!).

I have tried taking the outer metal 'sleeve' off, but the inner nozzle then pops off the steamer within seconds of me turning the steam on. I have tried using a cable tie - and this does seem to work - but I am a bit unhappy about using a plastic part that is almost certainly not 'food grade'.

What I'm now trying to work out is if I can buy a second outer metal sleeve and modify it in some way. I guess I could drill out the inner plastic portion so that it is just a hollow tube.

However, I understand that it also contains a 'hole' somewhere for admitting air. However, I can't seem to find that hole! Any help finding it greatly appreciated.

    • Hi, Tim. The hole for admiting the air is here, see my screenshot: https://screenshots.firefox.com/8ZoHuRYxR8OwUFiS/4dealer.ru

BUT! If the inner rubber pops off when you use it, then the problem is with the inner part, not with the outer metal one. Inner part shouldn't pop off (neither with outer metal part instelled nor without it). I heard several reviews with similar issues about Delonghi machines (they all have the same inner part of the steam wand - some made of plastic, some of rubber). For example the similar problem is described here https://coffee.stackexchange.com/questions/4152/pannarello-wand-on-delonghi-dedica-ec685-for-latte-art The reason is that sometimes the outer (smaller) hole on this inner rubber or plastic part is made too tiny, smaller than it should. That's why it pops off under the steam pressure. The possible solution you can make by your own - enlarge the hole using a hot idle or bradawl. Or buy a new part (part number 1769146) or ask for change under the warranty.

  • Hello! Great review and information. I am almost decided to get the 311 but I want to know something: I like mu coffe “americano” style (one or two espresso shots, dependind on how much coffee is used, and hot water). Will I be able to make it or to male something similar (maybe a very long lungo) with the 311? I do not intend to make several coffees one after another, just one for me. If I need a second one I have no problem waiting a little bit for the machine to warm up. Thanks!

    • Hi, Carlos. Yes, the machine allows you to make 60-80ml of espresso (which is the volume of vlassical double espresso) in one load without reheting it. And you can get hot water from the steam wand - just heat it a little more by switching to steam mode and then open the steam, you'll get a hot water. So, yes this machine seems to perfectly fit your needs.

  • Hey i have the older eco310 and am wanting to buy a standard non-pressurised filter basket and tamper but am unsure of the size basket and tamper.i need as I have no way of measuring accurately. I think I was told a 51mm basket would fit.but they weren't 100% sure. Any advice would be amazing thanks

    • Yes, the basket should be 51mm, but the weak point is the shape of the basket. Some will fit inside the portafilter, some not. I know that the 2cup filter from old Delonghis, which goes under 7313286069 part number, will perfectly fit. The tamper should be 51mm if you want to use it both for original basket and for unpressurized 7313286069. If only for 7313286069 - better buy 52mm.

More filter baskets options: this one from AliExpress will fit also. Didn't test personally, but I'm quite sure that this item on amazon.com is the same filter as previos one from Ali.

      • Sorry I didn't quite understand what you meant by this bit
"The tamper should be 51mm if you want to use it both for original basket and for unpressurized 7313286069. If only for 7313286069 – better buy 52mm"
Could you please.clarifly a bit thanks

        • I mean, that the original filet basket needs a 51mm tamper (52mm will be too big for it).
For single wall unpressurized basket 7313286069 (which you wanted to buy) you'll need 51mm OR 52mm (52mm will be better for it, 51mm a bit smaller but also OK).

That't why if you are planning to use both pressurized and unpressurized baskets, then a 51mm tamper will be universal.

          • Right thanks very much. But in the past day or so I have been questioning weather to keep this machine or replace with a gaggia classic. Or a cheap commercial unit I have seen for about £200 just needs cleaning up. Lol but again thanks very much

          • Commercial unit will be better, of course. However, cheap used commerical machine could be a problem - likely it's not "needs some cleanings". I would buy it only if I trust the seller and know the weak and strong points of particular model.

  • Hi, I can't decide whether to buy Delonghi Icona, Delonghi Distinta or Gaggia Viva Style. My first choice was Gaggia Viva Deluxe because of the metal body and the fact that it is a successor to Saeco Poemia (and Saeco Aroma?), but it is not currently available in my country, only Gaggia Viva Style and Gran Gaggia Style are. Which would you choose?

    • Dobar dan, Tamara!

Delonghi Icona = Delonghi Distinta from a techical point if view. Just the design and panarello steam wand sahpe are different. I like Icona's panarello a but more. These machines will be better if you mainly make cappuccino/latte.

If you will often brew classic shots of espresso without frothing the milk and you NOT prefer bitter espresso, then Saeco/Gaggia is definetly better. Gaggia Viva Deluxe doesn't have full metal body - it's still plasic with some metal decorations.

Viva Style = Gran Style, only the controls are different (rotary knob vs push buttons). Both machines are successors of old Saeco Poemia, indeed. However, pay attention to the fact that now they use smaller aluminium boiler (last Poemias already was equipped with new boiler). On older Poemias they used a bit bigger stainless steel boiler. I wrote about this change here: http://101coffeemachines.info/saeco/poemia/#boiler

      • Dobar dan, Dmitriy and hvala for the advice!! I found your reviews very useful, I am only hesitant for choosing Gaggia models because of the plastic body and the change of boilers. The idea is to recreate the taste of espresso I drank at friend's house - he has the old Saeco Aroma, which is 3 kg heavier than current Gaggia Viva models and probably overall better. It also difficult to decide because you mention in another review that Saeco makes espresso with more crema than Delonghi models, and that it tastes less bitter... I guess I will have to make a decision, and than just adjust the taste with the choice of coffee.

        • If the "idea is to recreate the taste of the old Saeco Aroma" + have a metal body + not having an alumnium boiler, then the only option is Gaggia Classic, which is more expensive :(

"I guess I will have to make a decision, and than just adjust the taste with the choice of coffee" - yes, you're right. All the time I mention that this machine makes more bitter espresso or something like that, it's should be understood as 'if everything else being equal' (coffee beans, grinder etc). Of course you can adjust the taste by choosing 'correct' coffee. But when it comes to crema, then it's more objective - due Delonghi's filter construction. However, good grinder + freshly roasted + good tamping = good crema even on Delonghi.

          • Thanks again! I would prefer Gaggia Classic too, but it's currently over my budget (but it's on my list for some future purchase). I decided to buy Viva Style, even though I am not too keen on the plastic body. I hope the taste and crema will make me forget about it, and the price is great, too.

  • Hi, please help! I have the Delongi Icona 311 and what drives me crazy is that one day the coffee pours perfectly the next it jams and nothing comes out the holes. The grind is the same, so is the tamp. It seems to struggle to force water though even if i leave the filter basket empty. There are no grounds blocking the holes on the filter or in the basket. The single pin hole seems too small. How do i resolve this?

    • Hmmm... Have no idea so far, but can you check - if the water goes freely every time without portafilter? The jammed coffee puck (when coffee doesn't go) is it wet/watery/dry?

      P. S. This single pin should be too small, it's unlikely that it causues the problem.

  • Hi, need help please. Should I get the ECOV311 or the ECP35.31? The ECOV311 here in Malaysia is about USD180 while the ECP35.31 is USD155. I normally drink cappuccino and expresso.
Or should I get the Dedica EC685 about USD230?

    Thanks.

    • there is no autodosage, so you manually control the time of brewing. however, yes, generally you need more time to make double basket.

  • Hai dmitriy
If i want to make 5 cup espresso with ecov311 , how many seconds i need to wait from 1 shot to another?

    • Just wait for an indication light to turn on again, usually it takes not more than 60 seconds. So while you grind/tamp the coffee/install portafilter for the next batch, boiler will be ready.

  • Hallo, I am Galih from Germany. I found your writing very helpful to me! I have just bought icona 311. Now I am trying to do some modifications. I want to make the filter holder bottomless but do not want to break anything from the original holder. I plan to order readily made holder from Aliexpress for dedica here

€ 31,64 42%OFF | Coffee Bottomless Filter For Delonghi ec680/ec685 Filter 51MM Stainless Steel Replacement Filter Basket Coffee Accessories
    https://a.aliexpress.com/N82c7MDi

The question is, do both models use the same filter holder size? are they interchangeable?
Bottomless is actually not a must, but at least I want to make it look like the design in cafe like this figure

    https://www.barista-shop.eu/2069-large_default/genuine-gaggia-portafilter-with-2-cup-filter-basket.jpg

I have ordered a non pressurized basket, and we will see if I can do a decent shot using this machine....

    Many thanks in advance,
    Galih

    • Galih, I’m sorry for my late reply. Hope it still can help you.

Yes, both models (311 and 680/685) uses the same size, BUT there is a difference in fitting. Dedica has three lugs (not sure that it is a correct word, I mean three parts that are placed around the holder to fix it in the the grouphead), while ECO311 _used_ to have two (maybe now it's three, you can check on you original holder).

  • Hi again dmitriy

How much coffee you personally can dose in double shot basket of delonghi ecov 311?

Bcoz im struggling to dose my coffee , i only can dose 12gram of coffee to my double shot basket for less ground spills

  • My eco-311 doesn't switch on ie I press the on button and 4 seconds later it switches off have to admit it's about to fly out the window. I've tried everything and not get anywhere.

  • Hi Dmitriy,

I bought my brand new Delonghi ECO 311 coffee maker around 3 weeks ago. I use Brita filtered water for making coffee. I'm pretty happy with espresso it gives me every morning. I noticed a kind of issue with a steam wand. It drips small amount (few drops) of water when coffee is delivered to a cup. The steam value is fully closed. When the machine is heating up there no leak through either a boiler outlet or the wand, it stays dry. Is this something I should worried for basically new machine? Thanks.

    • It simply means that the steam open/close mechanism is not fixed well _inside_ the machine, it leaks a bit. It's not 100% normal for a new machine, so if it do bother you and you can return/change it - I think it's totally under warranty.

On the other hand, such "symptoms" usually gone in several weeks on different machines with similar issues. Don't know exactly why, I assume that when some scale builds up, it helps to "seal" the leaking valve. Because usually after descaling it starts dtipping again, and stops again in 1-2 weeks.

  • Hey! Very useful article! Would you please advise if I can stream non dairy milk (coconut and almond) on this espresso machine? Is it powerful enough for that?

  • Hi Dmitry, Great info!!

We've been given a Eco310 as a gift and although it wont be our first preference, is there any mods I can do to make it look more premium and functional? I was thinking the Wand mod and all metal percofilter with a different baskets. Suggestions and links would be much appreciated. Thanks

  • Hi Dmitry,

Thanks for putting together the information on this site. It's a treasure trove!

I'm considering either an ECO 310 or one of the ECP models, but specifically because I'd like to try using an unpressurized porta-filter at some point.

    Could I please ask you:

    1) Can I buy an unpressured porta-filter basket for the ECO and ECP models, or maybe modify the pressurized version?

    2) I take it there's no unpressurised porta-filter for the Saeco variants?

    3) I think I prefer the ECO models to the ECP models because they're metal bodied and will keep warm longer and warm the cups better?

    4) Would the Solis Scala, Graef CM 800, or Rommelsbacher work well for grinding espresso and french press?

    Many thanks!

  • Hello Dmitriy,

I've been given Icona 310 as gift, although would not be our best choice as a coffee machine, I would like to make the most out of it including replacing the portafilter with all all metal. Could you please suggest a suitable portafilter which can make a decent espresso. Thanks

    • This one from AliExpress should fit (pay attention to the number of "nails", you need two, as your original one has). However, you can remove the lower plastic part of your original portafilter. It will look untidy, but it will be only metal.
